*Bega Valley experience needed for Bushfire Royal Commission*
Bega Valley Mayor Kristy McBain is urging her community to share their
stories and knowledge of this summer’s bushfires with the Royal Commission
set up to investigate the disaster.
“I want the Royal Commission to really get into the detail of what has
happened in local communities,” said Cr McBain.
Public submissions are open until April 28 via the Commission’s website or
by phone on 1800 909 826.

*Temporary works complete at Wandella Hall site*
There’s positive recovery progress at the Wandella Hall site with the
completion of temporary restoration works to the hall’s external toilet
facilities. The works are part of a larger project being funded by the
Rotary Club of Merimbula that will also include the permanent restoration
of the barbecue facility.
The toilet facility survived but power and water supplies were cut when the
hall was destroyed in the summer bushfires. The toilets are needed for use
by contractors working in the area clearing building sites and performing
property restoration work in the wake of the fires.

*Rate relief up for discussion at 29 April meeting*
This week, Bega Valley Shire residents will receive their fourth Rates
Installment notice.
“Council understands residents are experiencing a period of great
challenge, however it is a legislative requirement that we issue this
installment at this time,” General Manager Leanne Barnes said today.
“We understand people’s current financial situation might be stressed and
we don’t want this notice to place further pressure on residents.
“Council is meeting on 29 April to discuss the ongoing and combined impact
of COVID-19 and the bushfires, and what this situation means for the
management and collection of rates going forward,” she said.

*Weed support for landholders following drought, fire and flood*
With the scourge of drought compounded exponentially by this summer’s
bushfire disaster, not to mention the flooding that followed, our rural
landholders have immense challenges.
The wonderful support that has come from right across the country,
especially the enormous amount of donated fodder, has been nothing short of
remarkable, however with it comes the risk of new species of weeds
impacting our environment and economy.
Our dedicated Biosecurity team is focused on supporting and assisting our
landholders with the challenges they face.

*Local products wanted for international events*
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is looking to local
businesses in bushfire affected areas to supply a range of locally made
goods for future international events and forums.
DFAT wants to purchase small, non-perishable items – up to 500 of each -
such as honey, hand cream, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lip balm, sweets,
herbs, clothing, wine, small artworks (wooden cheese knives, collectables
etc), booklets or any other luxury-style products that they can use in gift
bags.
The products need to be available by June 2020.
If you are able to participate in this initiative, please supply a brief
description of what you could supply and a link to your website to
EconomicDevelopment at begavalley.nsw.gov.au by 5pm, Wednesday, 29 April.

*New Central Waste Facility bushfire clean-up infrastructure moves closer
to final approvals*
More pieces are falling into place as planning continues for the new
emergency landfill cell and resource recovery sorting pad at the Central
Waste Facility at Wanatta Lane, North Wolumla.
Director, Assets and Operations, Anthony McMahon said Council had submitted
required information to the Department of Environment, Industry and
Planning in response to a routine request for additional details.
“We’re hopeful the department will now move quickly to complete the
necessary Technical Assessment, allowing the clean-up to commence in
earnest.”
