Hi,

I am Iain Hamilton from Mother Mountain Forge at Dignams Creek.

I have a community creation project that I would like to put forward to the
Cobargo community. After the Black Saturday fires the Victorian
Blacksmith’s Association created a memorial gumtree with hundreds of hand
forged leaves contributed by blacksmiths from around the country and the
world.

Myself and Philippe Ravenel from Galba Forge would like to create a similar
tree for Cobargo and surrounds. BUT, we want ours to be different. We want
our tree to be full of leaves forged by every member of the community. I
teach classes in blacksmithing and knifemaking, and both myself and
Philippe are happy to have people out to our workshops and guide them
through making a steel gumleaf with their name on it for the tree.

*A tree that does not burn just like the community that did not burn. *

*Made with fire by every member of the community. *

This is a long-term project and there are a lot of details of course to be
worked out, but we wanted to get the idea out there to see if it is
something that the community would like to get behind.

We would like a leaf from everyone who considers themselves a Cobargo
local, whether they reside in Cobargo, Yowrie, Wandella, Dignams Creek,
Coolagolite, Quaama, Verona, Brogo etc. Although we are open to the idea of
making a second tree project for Quaama, this of course can all be worked
out in time.

Myself and Philippe are happy to donate our time to help everyone forge the
leaves. And if any other blacksmiths in the area would like to do the same,
they are welcome to.

We will need to liaise with council on regulations and placement; (we are
thinking in the park as part of the new playground project.) Sarah Hamilton
is happy to do this part, but may need help with writing the proposal.

We will need to seek donations of materials and forge fuel and or money so
this doesn’t put any member of the community out of pocket, so will need
help writing arts grants proposals and approaching big steel and gas
companies.

Once all the leaves are complete, we will need a structural welder to
assemble the tree, as well as help to get this in place with transport,
cranes etc.

So, please, give us your feedback and feel free to contact us. An example
of a forged steel leaf can be seen on our Facebook page:

Thanks,

Iain and Sarah Hamilton
