BEGA VALLEY BUSHFIRE UPDATE – 3 January at 3.17 pm
The Border Fire to the south of Eden; the Werri Berri Fire in the Bemboka area; the Myrtle Mountain Fire near Wyndham and the Badja Forest Road Fire in the north of the Shire are all currently at Advice Level.
Additional emergency services personal and resources are flooding into the Shire ahead of what is still expected to be an extremely challenging day tomorrow (Saturday).
The situation has now been broken into four key zones that modelling has indicated represent the current areas of greatest concern:
Zone 1 – The north-east section of the Shire, including Mumbulla, Cuttagee, Barraga Bay, Wapengo, Tanja, Nutleys Creek Road, Bermagui, Cobargo and Quaama areas.
Zone 2 – Warrigal Range Road, Upper Brogo Road, Coopers Gully, Desert Creek Road, Buckajo, Angledale and Greendale areas.
Zone 3 – Mogareeka, Tathra and Kalaru areas.
Zone 4 – Eden and Kiah areas.
The Police are being joined by the SES in conducting a door knocks and information sharing in these zones today
The clear advice for those in zones 1 and 2 is that the time to leave is now, while those in zones 3 and 4 are being advised to leave.
Your Neighbourhood Safer Places are not an option.
People are invited to head to the evacuation centres at the Bega Showground and Club Sapphire at Merimbula where there is power, food, water and mobile phone coverage.
There is also a centre operating from the Eden Fishermen’s Club, but this is for registration purposes only.
Both Evacuation Centres are also being staffed by a range of support agencies that will be able to support you and make you comfortable while you are away from home.
You will also have access to the townships of Bega and Merimbula.
If you choose to move to the Bega Showground or Club Sapphire we ask that you bring bedding materials for the people you are with. If you can’t do that, alternative arrangements are available.
If you are a visitor, do not need to be in the Shire and have the capacity to leave, we ask you to leave now via the Snowy Mountain Highway and travel on to Cooma, Canberra or beyond.
The next community information briefing will be held at the Bega Showground today at 6pm.

A Boil Water Notice still applies for Quaama, Cobargo, Bermagui, Beauty Point, Fairhaven, Wallaga Lake, Wallaga Lake Heights, Wallaga Lake Koori Village and Akolele, as well as trunk main customers in these areas.
All water for drinking, food preparation, the cleaning of teeth needs to be boiled before use.
Potable water for drinking purposes is available at the Cobargo Showground (BYO container).
At Bemboka - Potable water, for drinking purposes only, is available at the Bemboka fire shed (BYO container). Tap water at Bemboka should only be used for firefighting, there is ash in the town's water supply. Be aware that the ash in the water could damage home hot water systems if used.
All other water supplies in the Bega Valley Shire are currently unaffected.
