NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro has granted a Mining Exploration Licence 9154 to Buidl Pty Ltd to approximately 30 square km of bushland, cleared farmland and residences predominantly south of the Bermagui-Cobargo Road. This company now has the authority to negotiate access to private land. Landowners are not allowed to refuse access outright.
Coolagolite has: a strong working farming community; significant environmental assets in the form of national parks, remnant habitat, diverse flora and fauna, and catchment streams for the Bermagui River; cultural heritage significance for Aboriginal people; and vital tourism assets in the form of natural beauty and farming heritage.
Some of this Coolagolite community were significantly affected by the recent bushfires that tore through Cobargo and Coolagolite, destroying property, environment and lives.
Greg Lissaman, Mountain View Tomatoes, is preparing to mount an opposition campaign to the imposition of the mining exploration licence. If you are able to assist Greg, please contact him by email (mailto:dontminecoolagolite at gmail.com) or via Facebook (https://facebook.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9030b531e962ad02c68a923c8&id=d61920bc79&e=34e977e1dc) .
Brunswick Heads timber bridge fully restored in 2021
There have been no significant new developments since our community meeting on 2 June. Council staff are listening to information we have supplied to them with regard to restoring and rejuvenating Cuttagee Bridge with timber, but Council has not yet rescinded their decision to demolish the bridge.
Council is requesting that the community comment on their Towards 2042 Community Strategic Plan (57 pages).
The survey is said to only take 6 minutes and closes on 30 July. This Plan dates back to around 2016, and is different to the Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS) which was updated last year. You can access the Plan and the Survey here (https://facebook.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9030b531e962ad02c68a923c8&id=325968caa7&e=34e977e1dc) .
Our key observations on the Plan to date are in this document (https://facebook.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9030b531e962ad02c68a923c8&id=6e3940df33&e=34e977e1dc) .
The Bermagui Community Forum management committee made a submission on the State Government Review of the Heritage Act 1977. Our submission drew on the recent example of issues faced at both local and state level with trying to protect the local heritage listed Cuttagee Bridge. The full submission is here (https://facebook.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9030b531e962ad02c68a923c8&id=9ccf6438f6&e=34e977e1dc) .
It is pleasing to note the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery grants announced recently for our immediate local area, including:
* $9.6m Cobargo Community Development to rebuild the Cobargo CBD (eastern and western projects)
* $4.9m Cobargo Bushfire Resilience Centre, a new development
* $947k The Crossing Land Education Centre, a community led recovery and regeneration education hub for South East NSW
* $476k Bermagui Preschool Cooperative Society, a therapy and counselling room project
* $426k BVSC, to upgrade Bermagui Indoor Sports Stadium
* $336k Four Winds Concerts, to improve the Four Winds cultural precinct in Barragga Bay
