Blue Pool Repairs - Survey Results

Bermagui Community members were asked in June to respond to a quick survey on whether the Blue Pool should be repaired.

We received 34 responses to the survey and 24 or 70% were in favour of repairing the seaward wall.

The survey results were provided to Council and we await their response on the timing of repair work.
Council Savings Committee Established

Bermagui Community Forum is pleased to note that Council has established a working group of Councillors and the CEO to hold regular workshops to identify any potential cost savings prior to deciding any potential rate variation application. This step is in line with one of the BCF recommendations in our Update of 25 May.

We also note that a small increase in rates of 2.5% has been approved by IPART. This is unrelated to the proposal for a 35 per cent variation, which has yet to be discussed and submitted to IPART.
Cobargo Rebuild Proposal

There were about 50 attendees and the masterplan designs presented appeared to be generally accepted by the audience. The Member for Bega Michael Holland attended. The presentation including site drawings made by Ashley Dunn from Dunn & Hillam Architects followed by Q&A. A small scale model was also on display. More information can be viewed on the CCDC website<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffacebook.us15.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D9030b531e962ad02c68a923c8%26id%3De52a32590d%26e%3D6e6a08d3a7&data=05%7C01%7C%7Ca7c48f250d02456227f608da63043f09%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637931167171818863%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=K7vD%2FJh2pZRyhk9yacJd6JOZTntySkBrjxwIVSpq3ow%3D&reserved=0>.

The DA is expected to be submitted in next 4 to 6 months, however the shape and form of the design is now fairly set subject to any major community comments in next couple of weeks. The detailed designs will now be developed, with decisions still to be made on facades, colours and materials. It was stated that there would be heritage looking facades, street awnings from all buildings, and probably brick at lower building levels with timber higher up and timber frame 1.2 metre windows.

In general the notable aspects of the design were:

  * Three buildings: Village Square, Market Hall and Post Office.
  * Buildings are two storey with retail space on ground floor and 5 apartments in total above.
  * Both the Village Square and Market Hall have courtyard areas directly off the street which were covered with seating.
  * The roof over the Market Hall courtyard area is gabled.
  * The retail shops faced onto the courtyard areas which effectively increased the direct street access frontage, ie an L shape of shops rather than a line along the street.
  * The retail shops will be about 25 square metres with demountable walls to allow expansion.
  * The new Post Office will be brick.
  * The Visitor Information Centre will be the third shop along the courtyard from the street in the Village Square to help attract visitor traffic.
  * There will be awnings over the footpath but only 1.5 to 1.8 metres deep and about 3 metres high. It was explained that they couldn’t be deeper due to traffic hazard issues.
  * A pedestrian crossing across the highway between the two courtyards is hoped for from the RTA at a future time.

A pre DA meeting was held with Council on 17 June. Council will give priority to this DA when submitted. The CCDC will start ordering materials as soon as DA submitted to minimise future cost increases. Cost increases are currently running at 35%. The CCDC is hopeful of finishing the project within 2 years.

The designs looked practical and reasonably sympathetic to rest of the town. The public courtyards proposed are directly accessible to the street and are covered. The awnings over the footpath could be a bit deeper.
Proposal to Lower the Speed Limit on Wallaga Lake Road

The local branch of the ALP has submitted a proposal to Council's Traffic Committee and Transport for NSW to lower the speed limit to 80km/h for the section of the Wallaga Lake Road from Keating Drive to Fairhaven. The illustration below shows the proposed change.

The submission cites a recent accident at the corner of Bermagui Cobargo road and the state of the road through the forest leading down to the corner of Keating Drive.
