It's is fair to say that the past few weeks have indeed shown us the
strength of the Bega Valley community as a whole as well as the smaller
communities of townships, villages, neighbourhoods, support/volunteer
services and workplaces.
During these past weeks we have had the privilege to bear witness to
amazing examples of generosity, resilience, selflessness and kindness
against this backdrop of terrible crisis, loss and grief.
As the bushfire crisis continues the people of the Bega Valley will also
continue to look after each other, keep each other safe, support each other
and stay strong.
It's not even a choice - it's who we are.

*WRC Services & Supports*

The WRC is open as usual from 10am - 4pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and
we will continue to have all of our regular services and supports available
including access to phones & internet, photocopying, scanning, shower,
washing machine and a spot to stop and have cuppa.
Remember too, for anyone who needs it, we have food on Wednesday and
Thursday mornings every week (until it runs out), sanitary and personal
hygiene items and a small op-shop that currently has a lot of children's
clothing.
While we do ask for a gold coin donation (which goes towards keeping the
service operating) for any of the services or goods that we make available
we do offer all of these things for free to people in crisis who are not in
a position to give anything in return.
*WRC Workshops & Activities*

Many of the wonderful local women who provide direct support to the WRC
through volunteering their time, labour and expertise have been directly
impacted by the fires already and more may be impacted in the coming days
as we all anxiously watch and hope for a reprieve from what is starting to
feel like a crisis with no end.
As such the WRC may not be able to offer some of our planned activities and
workshops over the next few weeks. We will keep you all informed of what we
have on offer via facebook and email but please do not hesitate to drop in
or give us a call on 64921367 to check up on what activities might be
happening.

*A message about trauma.....*

There can be little doubt that if you live in the Bega Valley then you
yourself or someone you know are likely to have been impacted by the
bushfires in some way.
It is important to remember that people react to trauma, grief and loss in
a variety of different ways and there is definitely no 'wrong' or 'right'
response and it is very normal for people to have some level of emotional
or even physical response following a traumatic event or situation.
Individuals may display a range of emotional responses following a
traumatic event: fear, anxiety and panic, shock – difficulty believing in
what has happened, feeling detached and confused, feeling numb, not wanting
to connect with others or becoming withdrawn from those around them.
Some people will not want to talk about their experience immediately either
because they are still processing what has happened, are not yet
comfortable to discuss it, feel overwhelmed by the idea of talking or
simply do not have the capacity to put their experience into words at this
time. For these people we need to respect their silence and their space
while gently ensuring that they know that when they are ready they will
have the shoulder or the ear that they need when the time comes to speak.
Some people will need to repeat their story many times as they process what
they have experienced. For these people we need to give them the chance to
speak and provide feedback which acknowledges what they have been through
and how they are feeling.
Children too will be impacted by the trauma of the current bushfire crisis
and it is really important for the adults in their lives to be aware of,
look out for and provide support to children experiencing trauma.
We are very lucky in the Bega Valley to have some fantastic mental health
and support services on the ground to help us all to deal with the trauma
we are experiencing now and who will be available to continue to support
our community in the weeks and months to come as we move into a recovery
phase. Please reach out to those services whenever needed or speak with
your GP about a referral.
